The Trinity Column

You can find this unique masterpiece in Olomouc. The column consists of several Baroque statues decanted into one sculptural group. It is the biggest and the most interesting column in the Central Europe, so it is not surprising that in 2000 it was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The column was created by Václav Rendera

The father of this piece of work is an architect and stonecutter Václav Rendera. Also other sculptors participated – e.g. Ondřej Zahner and others. The construction of the column took several years, from 1716 to 1754. It is 35 metres tall, which makes it the tallest sculptural group in the Czech Republic.

The description of the Trinity Column

A small chapel is also a part of the column. It contains some relieves which depict Kain’s, Abel’s, Noah’s and Abraham’s sacrifices and the Jesus’ death on the crucifix. On the top, there is a group of above life-size figures. In the middle there is a sculptural group of the Trinity and below there is a sculptural group depicting the Maria’s assumption. When you look at it, it seems to be flying. The sculptures are copper.

The column was built to thank for the end of plague epidemic in Olomouc and also to celebrate the Catholic Church and religion.
