The Jewish quarter is the only Jewish sight on the UNESCO list outside Israel. When you enter this quarter, you immerse yourself into the atmosphere of old winding streets, mystical passages and corners.
The Jewish town hall was in the centre of the community. The building has a Baroque core. You can see a barrel vault, lunettes or a beautiful facade. Also the rabbinate is very well done. The foundation of the building is from the 17th century. A big supporting pillar is typical for the frontage.
Jewish synagogues
There are two synagogues in the town. We can see beautiful wall paintings from the 18th century there. It is open for public. Among other interesting buildings we can mention for example an almshouse, a hospital or a tannery.
The Basilica of St Procopius
The Basilica of St Procopius was originally a church consecrated to Madonna. It was built in 13th century as a part of a Benedictine monastery. It was built in the Romanesque style with some Gothic features. It was being captured by Matyáš Korvín’s soldiers in 1468. Then it was used for secular purposes. In the 18th century it was reconstructed by Maxmilián Kaňka. In 2003 it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, as well as the Jewish quarter.
