Prague
One of the first UNESCO-listed sites in the Czech Republic was the capital – Prague .
ReklamaIt is one of the three most visited places in Europe. A lot of famous people visited Prague in the past: e.g. W.A. Mozart, L. van Beethoven, the British Queen Elizabeth II., and the Pope John Paul II. and many others. Prague is often called „the heart of Europe“.
In 2000, Prague became the European Capital of Culture. It is the seat of the president, governmental, cultural and educational institutions.
The historic centre of Prague, taking 866 hectares, is rich in a lot of interesting and beautiful buildings built in many architectonic styles (the Gothic, Baroque, Renaissance, Romanesque, in the Art Noveau style or in the cubist style). Historical Prague consists of four parts: the Old Town, the New Town, the Lesser Town and Hradčany.
Cultural and ecclesiastical sights
Charles Bridge and Prague Castle
The Charles Bridge was built over the river Vltava. It is adorned by thirty statues and sculptural groups.
The Prague Castle is a very important place – it is the seat of the head of the state. It was built around 880 A.D.; it has gone through a big development. Today it is the biggest castle complex in the world. St Vitus Cathedral is to be found in the Prague Castle.
The Jewish Town
The Prague Jewish Town is one of the oldest Jewish towns in the world. There are a lot of synagogues and a Jewish cemetery.
Old Town Square
All visitors are attracted by the Old Town Hall with its astronomical clock, which was constructed in 1410 by Mikuláš of Kadaň and painted by Josef Mánes.
Petřín observation tower
Couples in love can visit romantic Petřín with its observation tower, from which you can see almost the whole Prague.
The National Theatre and Rudolfinum
People who like culture should visit the National Theatre or Rudolfinum – the seat of the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra.
Families with children can spend a nice day in the ZOO or in the Botanical garden.
