Litomyšl

The chateau in Litomyšl and the buildings, which belong to it, were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1999. The history of this sight started in the 10th century, exactly in the year 981 when a Litomyšl castle is mentioned. The castle was a predecessor of the today chateau. This Renaissance gem was built in 1568. It was burnt down in 1775. At the end of the 18th century it was reconstructed.

Visitors can see beautiful interiors and also a chandelier which was made for the Miloš Forman’s film Amadeus and then it was put into one of the halls of the chateau. In the cellar of the chateau we can see a collection of statues or we can visit the picture gallery on the second floor.

The Baroque theatre

The Baroque theatre is an indivisible part of the chateau. It has a unique collection of coulisses and decorations. It was made between 1796 and 1797. The decorations were made by Josef Platzer. The theatre is used even in the present for some culture events.

The Chateau Brewery

One part of the chateau complex is a brewery. It was built in 1585 by the Persteins and went under reconstruction in the years 1629 and 1630. The Persteins were given the right to brew in 1629 from the local people. They made profit, so they enlarged the buildings of the brewery. One of the new buildings was rebuilt in the Neo-Romanesque style in 1860 and there were some Baroque changes of interior made by F.M. Kaňka. The brewery has sgraffiti decorations on the walls. Bedřích Smetana, one of the giants of the Czech classical music, was born in this building.

The building is used as the main seat of the YMCA. Some classical music concerts, lectures and seminars are sometimes held in the brewery hall.
