Kroměříž
The archiepiscopal chateau and the chateau gardens were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1998.
The Archiepiscopal chateau in Kroměříž
The Archiepiscopal chateau and its 86 metres tall tower became the dominant features of the whole town. The chateau was built in the 12th century thanks to bishops. They built a Gothic castle which was totally destroyed by Swedish soldiers. In the 17th century a Baroque palace was built instead of it.
There are several representative halls. If you like art, you should not definitely miss the chateau picture gallery.
If you want to see the town from a bird’s point of view, you can visit the tower. Near the chateau there is a mint which was built in the 17th century.
The Chateau garden
This garden is situated next to the chateau. It was used not only for growing flowers but also for growing vegetables. It was given a Baroque form in the 17th century. In the 19th century it was rebuilt as a landscape park. The area of the park is 64 hectares. There are a lot of small rivers and lakes. You can also visit a small ZOO.
The Flower Garden
This garden was built in the 17th century by the bishop Karel II. Lichtenstein-Kastelkorn. It is a kind of an Italian garden with a rotunda in the middle.
