What is UNESCO?
The organization UNESCO was established after the WWII, exactly on 4th November 1945, by signing the Constitution of UNESCO in London. The abbreviation UNESCO means the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. The headquarters is in Paris. In these days it associates 190 members. It includes the Czech Republic, which became a member on 22nd February 1993.
UNESCO focuses on these fields: education, science, communication, culture and information. The independent projects supported by UNESCO are: programmes of international cooperation, training and expert programmes, independent media propagation, freedom of the press, cultural diversity propagation, regional and cultural historic projects, international cooperation treaties on the field of cultural and natural heritage and human rights, literacy spreading and an effort to balance the differences in the possibilities to use digital technologies in the world.
The Czech Republic and UNESCO
The Czech Republic has established a consultative body for the government, which is called “Czech commission for the UNESCO”. It should provide the meetings of the national institutions and experts with the UNESCO, study the UNESCO documents, cooperate with the UNESCO headquarters in Paris and spread the organization ideas in the Czech Republic.
The Czech commission has 50 members. It comprises the representatives of important governmental and nongovernmental institutions like the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, the National Volunteer Centre, etc., and then there are the representatives of the ministries and important science and cultural personalities. The members are elected for four years. The important thing is to provide a good relationship between the Czech Republic and the UNESCO. This has been discussed since September 2006 by the Permanent Delegation of the Czech Republic to UNESCO lead by PhDr. Petr Janyška.
The organization cooperates with more than 395 nongovernmental organizations and foundations and with networks of international and regional organizations.
